With the current installation of trackside signals, the modernisation of the Graz Köflacher Bahn is entering the next round. This year, KRUCH is already supplying the second tranche of completely pre-assembled trackside signals. That´s not all – the complete demand on the planned lines amounts to an average of 30 pieces/year over a total of 10 years and is therefore one of the largest orders in the history of KRUCH.

“We are very pleased to be able to actively participate in such large modernization projects. This allows us to make an important contribution to future-oriented safety technology with our traditional company,” says Josef Datzreiter, KRUCH CEO.

The framework agreement signed with DPB GmbH in 2019 sealed the deal. The planned measures will continue until 2029.

We are live again!

On the 18th September it is time again. The InnoTrans 2018 starts in a new round. Of course, the KRUCH team is once again a guest at the leading international trade fair for traffic technology this year!

„The KRUCH team will once again be taking the trade fair events from the visitors’ perspective this year. Each year, InnoTrans is the opportunity for us to exchange with industry specialists and introduce our new products. We are looking forward to interesting discussions!“, says KRUCH CEO Jan Röhl.

Since InnoTrans 2014

The „SMA“ signal mast, which was exhibited in full size at InnoTrans 2014, celebrated its „world premiere“ at that time. With the Energy-Flow-Simulation „EFS“, KRUCH presented a tool with which after a few minutes of training the most important situations can be simulated and evaluated in the railway technology every day. The numerous new developments in the field of catenary components underpin the claim of KRUCH to be one of the leading specialists in this product field. This year, the focus will be on the latest KRUCH product: the Trolleybus Checkpoint

Many multinational companies share one small detail in their history: It all started with a small idea.

Many multinational companies share one small detail in their history: It all started with a small idea. Step by step, the ideas lead to huge success. KRUCH is proud of this part of the company’s history.

It all began in these buildings in the 12th municipal district of Vienna 147 years ago (picture taken in 1983). On the way of growth and success, KRUCH changed headquarter location a few times.

Even then KRUCH developed and produced their own products such as chimney pots and pressure cookers. A few of the production machines, such as the 650t friction screw press which was invented by the Scherb brothers, are still in use these days. These reliable machines conduce to KRUCHs success story.

CEO Jan Röhl feels both melancholy and pride, while looking back at this time. “My parents absorbed the business from the Kruch family in 1980. Engineer Karl Kruch worked with them for a while, he was such a genius academic talent. My father was able to improve the companys success even more. He ramped up the railway business, developed the first patented products and convinced the customers by reliability and quality despite the fact that the available resources were simple.”

Our team grew big and got international in the last decades. We develop and produce future-oriented railway products, latest computer simulations (f.e. the Energy-Flow-Simulation – EFS) and take the internet of things to the railway infrastructure (f.e. the state remote monitoring of catenary components). The concept is very simple, so Jan Röhl: “Listen to the customer’s needs, develop and produce really simple, fast and safe products, which facilitate the customer’s work processes and increase the route availability.”

“Our products open new markets and opportunities in the railway sector. In the last years our innovations like the signal mast with lift (SMA), the hanger clamp (HKL-02) or the Energy-Flow-Simulation (EFS) enjoyed huge response by stakeholders worldwide.”, Jan Röhl says.

The 147 years of KRUCH history show impressively, how enthusiasm and a great team can lead to great success in a “small” family business.

On the 2nd of July, KRUCH invited groups of interest to the first in-house exhibition at the headquarters in Vienna.

DI (FH) Jan Röhl at the interview

On the 2nd of July, KRUCH invited groups of interest to the first in-house exhibition at the headquarters in Vienna. DI (FH) Jan Röhl, director of KRUCH, talked about this exciting event and future perspectives.

KRUCHs in-house exhibition – Presentation of SMA (Signal Mast System)

On the 2nd of July, KRUCH invited potential customers and groups of interest to the first in-house exhibition at the headquarters in Vienna. DI (FH) Jan Röhl, director of KRUCH, talked about this exciting event.

Mr. Röhl, why did this SMA-event happen?
After five years of development, numerous prototypes and extensive tests of the signal mast system it was time to present our invention to potential customers and groups of interest. Therefor an in-house exhibition at our manufacturing base in Vienna is a great possibility. The time is ripe to show the market the benefits of SMA.

What program was to be expected?

First of all, we talked about the development of the SMA. Especially about the meaning of SMA for the operators. Afterwards every guest had the chance to try SMA out on their selves to experience the benefits of occupational safety. For me the best moment was when participants who tested the cab started brainstorming about possible steps to accelerate putting SMA into operation.

What did the participants get to see?

At our headquarters, we operate and test several SMA in different versions. Additionally, we presented a few short films, for example “Exchanging a signal in snow storm conditions”. We also visited our manufacturing lines. For the customers this is the most exciting part of the event. Highly-automated robotics and highly qualified craftsman and craftswoman, producing the reliable products, our customer worship.

Why is the signal mast system meaningful?

It takes time till the ETCS-Level 2 (European Train Control System) is available on a large scale, in the meantime we need block signals that are operating reliably. With SMA a signal technician is able to exchange a signal within only five minutes. That means, just between regular train frequency. The overhead contact line doesn’t need to be switched off and it is absolutely safe and comfortable.

What do you predict for the future of SMA?
Laws and regulations for the protection of employees in dangerous environment just as railway infrastructure are getting stricter and stricter. get improved continuously to prevent accidents and personal injury.
At the same time railway companies need to keep the train moving efficiently to achieve the aim of people and transports in time. A rail-range, that needs to detour or stop their trains for maintenance or repair work, is less efficient and losing money.
SMA is the instrument that enables achieving both aims.
For these reasons, I think, a lot of railways will deploy SMA for increasing safety of track signals maintenance, the rout performance, thereby boosting efficiency and profitability of the railway increases. We’re going to produce thousands of SMAs.

Are you planning more events like this?
Of course we want to organise more of these happenings. Till now we don´t have any fixed date but if anybody is interested, feel free to contact sales@kruch.com. Also visit our website regulary to get the information you need.

Mr. Röhl, thanks for the interview!

The KRUCH signal pole with integrated service lift is a new revolutionary concept, where the maintenance people – riding on an electro-hydraulic platform – are lifted up to their site of operation to service the signals in a height of 5 m to 7 m above ground. Compared to common methods for servicing signals the service time will be minimised, the safety at work will be vastly improved and vehicle-skylifts will not be needed anymore.

The advantages

Work safety in all conditions

Vastly improved working speed

No need of vehicle sky lift for signal maintenance

Unbeatable ROI

Retrofit for existing signals also available
